Summer has arrived in full swing–that time of year when strolling sidewalks means dodging drips of runoff from window A/C units. It’s a season for sweating profusely and choking mid-block as the stench of garbage marinating in the morning sun assaults your nostrils.

This is also a season for lounging on fire escapes, brownstone stoops, rooftops. It’s Rockaway Beach at midday, the Coney Island boardwalk, it’s Prospect Park at dusk. It’s drivers blasting their music from car stereos for all the world to hear. It’s getting eaten alive on evening walks through Park Slope, because the mosquitos in that ‘hood are malicious.

You’ll need light cotton clothing and good walking shoes. You’ll need to drink water–lots and lots of water. Grab a friend, go for a sweaty trek and take a break from your screens for an hour or two. Take it all in: the sights, the sounds. Plug your nose or bring a clothespin. This won’t last forever, so enjoy it while you can–it’s summertime in New York City.

  1. Well-said, Gina! I remember all of this about life in NYC as well – and it’s quite similar in Philly, too (esp. the dripping wall a/c units!!) Hope you and yours are having an enjoyable summer (despite the way-too intense heat.)

    1. Thanks. 😉 And true. I remember Philly feeling even more humid than NYC at times. Makes sense, I suppose: it’s further south and slightly inland.

Hope you’re also having a great summer, Patricia!
