In the early spring of 2014, I posted the original Boston Gallery. A year-and-a-half passed, and although I often intended to make another trip to Beantown, I could never seem to find the time. A few weeks ago, I finally carved time out of no time and trekked north, where I found the city as as picturesque as ever. I only wish I could have stayed longer.

A half hour northwest of Center City, the neighborhood of Chestnut Hill is what some might call a “bedroom suburb” of Philadelphia, although it has a Philadelphia zip code. I’ve lived in Chestnut Hill for all of five months, and have walked up and down its main thoroughfare — Germantown Avenue — countless times. More often than not, I’m accompanied by my Boxer companion, Baby Girl. The two of us window shop (or at least I do), feel the sun […]

The Wissahickon Valley in Philadelphia’s northwest corridor has inspired creatives for centuries. Following are a few gifts–in the form of words and images–bestowed to me by the wild and wonderful Wissahickon. Contemplate the perfection of a single falling leaf: unannounced, unassuming like a simple, solitary sage who’s reached his expiration. The time comes to let go, to free fall–spin round and round– drawing circles from sky to ground, landing atop carpets of brown, orange, magenta. Time’s passage weathers one to a […]

The Wissahickon Valley is a 1,400-acre park in the northwest corner of Philadelphia proper. Second to none when it comes to beautiful scenery all year round, the area is particularly breathtaking in autumn. No wonder it has inspired poets, writers, photographers, and painters for so many centuries. Nowadays, the park hosts mostly pedestrians, equestrians, hikers and bikers. (Few rollerbladers come here, however, since the vast majority of paths are unpaved.) Scattered alongside the wooded paths, ancient trees bear the markings […]

In October, we set out pumpkins and tell ghost stories. We invite the spirit world to interact with us, the living. And, for one month only, it becomes impossible to ignore how inextricably intertwined death and life truly are. Today’s youthful beauty is but tomorrow’s faded photograph. Perhaps that photograph tells us the tale of a woman whose spirit still lingers here on earth, her whisper audible to those who will only listen. And, in the weeks leading up to […]
