Day 8 in Oaxaca

May 25, 2019 by Gina Marie

I love it here in the southwestern Mexican state of Oaxaca. The capital, Oaxaca de Juárez, which I have dubbed “ODJ”, makes for the perfect balance between relaxed and urban, and between grounded and sublime. ODJ is an undeniably unique, colorful, and charming city. Inquiring about my travels, my sister recently asked, “So, is this the real Mexico, or are there lots of Americans there?” I answered, “Both.” And for the next four weeks, I am fortunate to be among them.

Beachy Morning on the Shore

June 19, 2016 by Gina Marie

Life is just beachy. As of this week, I’ve lived on the Jersey Shore for precisely one year . . . and when I say “on the shore,” I mean we are literally steps away from the beach. The curious thing is, I’ve only brought my good camera out there two or three times! I generally just bring my camera phone because it’s easier. To be fair, I have caught some great photos that way, as well. However, there’s nothing quite like a […]

Words to Ponder

June 14, 2016 by Gina Marie

“As someone who has been on this planet for 58 years this lifetime, I can tell you that there have always been frightening world problems. If you focus upon these problems, you will miss out on joy. If you fear the future, you will think improving your life is futile. If you’re waiting until there’s a magical peaceful moment in the world, you will miss out on the many peaceful moments in your personal world.  Life goes by SO fast! […]

Uplifting Thoughts

March 30, 2016 by Gina Marie

I’m determined to remain teachable . . . 1) For an entirely new perspective, look up. See what beauty might be found aloft.  2) Be the beacon of light that shines in the darkness, in the chaos, in the ever-changing kaleidoscope of seasons and locations. 3) Each molecule is infused with the infinite.  4) Speak your truth, even if your voice shakes.  5) When day turns to night and the temperatures drop, there is beauty yet to be found. 6) Dare […]

Beautiful Thoughts

March 26, 2016 by Gina Marie

The wisdom of others teaches us how  . . . 1) We each have a human body that lasts a hundred years if we are lucky. Every moment, every interaction, every day we are given the opportunity to learn from each other. The most difficult situations can be our greatest teachers. 2) Companionship is present in our lives in many forms. We are never truly alone.   3) The sight of the sky is a reminder of freedom, expansiveness, and possibility.   […]

Appropriation

December 9, 2014 by Gina Marie

This “Mother Mary” greeting card has been sitting on my bedroom dresser for a few months. Recently, I added some Christmas decorations to the dresser and I noticed how the sparkly colorful lights reflected off the greeting card’s glossy face. It’s rather pretty, so of course I had to snap a picture. Here is the result . . . not too shabby. But then, Mother Mary is rarely shabby.

Flare Photography

December 29, 2013 by Gina Marie

“Lens flare is created when non-image forming light enters the lens and subsequently hits the camera’s film or digital sensor. This often appears as a characteristic polygonal shape, with sides which depend on the shape of the lens diaphragm. It can lower the overall contrast of a photograph significantly and is often an undesired artifact, however some types of flare may actually enhance the artistic meaning of a photo. Flare can take many forms, and this may include just one […]
