The ancient light of stars long-dead
blazes on a dark sky canvas.

Sleep comes, and with it
the fading of constellations.

Heartbeat slows,
Deep sigh, brain waves electric.

In dreams, levitating
high above mountaintops.

With a whoosh, snapped awake,
bloodstream meets adrenaline.

Outside, the sky an inky blue
backdrop to the silent stillness of night.

    Forever the poet. Very soothing.

  2. Lovely, Gina! I like that you show tension in the poem. At first I thought it was to be about just relaxing reverie – but the snapped awake part is soo much more real-world for many of us. I often wake up middle of what must’ve been REM – only to start thinking about whatever and lose that ability to return to those much-desired, blissful moments of deep sleep! 🌙

    1. Your instincts are good — for the longest time (we’re talking 12+ years), a shorter version of this poem mostly focused on the “reverie” theme sat in my Notes app. And the other day, I came across it, spent a few minutes every day with it over a long weekend, and WHAM. The “snapped awake” part took shape, and now the poem finally feels complete. Better a dozen years late than never! I appreciate your thoughtful comment, as always. Happy 4th of July weekend!

      1. TY! And a happy 4th of July to you and yours too, Gina!
