Easter Sunday Along the Schuylkill River Banks

April 21, 2014 by Gina Marie

The east and west banks of the Schuylkill River are part of Philadelphia’s Fairmount Park which — at 4,180 acres — is the largest landscaped park in the United States. Following are a few pictures captured on Easter Sunday along the east bank of this majestic river. Flowering trees, a sparkling blue river, bridges, and towering skyscrapers lend themselves to an aesthetically pleasing panorama. A young couple snuggles together beneath a copse of Dogwood trees in bloom. Upriver, a pre-teen […]

Flare Photography

December 29, 2013 by Gina Marie

“Lens flare is created when non-image forming light enters the lens and subsequently hits the camera’s film or digital sensor. This often appears as a characteristic polygonal shape, with sides which depend on the shape of the lens diaphragm. It can lower the overall contrast of a photograph significantly and is often an undesired artifact, however some types of flare may actually enhance the artistic meaning of a photo. Flare can take many forms, and this may include just one […]

In Half-Dreams That Shift and Roll

April 11, 2013 by Gina Marie

“Thin are the night-skirts left behind By daybreak hours that onward creep, And thin, alas! the shred of sleep that wavers with the spirit’s wind: But in half-dreams that shift and roll And still, remember and forget, My soul this hour has drawn your soul A little nearer yet.” -Dante Gabriel Rossetti (1828-1882), from “Insomnia” Bedtime for Baby Girl, © 2013 by Gina Marie Lazar Lovrencevic. It’s What’s Inside that Counts

February 14, 2013 by Gina Marie

Some believe that a girl should never give up a good apartment—not even for marriage. However, I didn’t get that particular memo until long after I’d already married (and long after I’d traded in my studio for a larger unit, sans the dazzling skyline view). Do I wish that I’d kept the place, so that Jeff and I might have a cozy little unit in which to reside whenever we returned to Minneapolis for a brief visit? Not really. After […]

A Boy and His Dog

September 6, 2012 by Gina Marie

The most beautiful moments in life are like falling leaves: that is, graceful as they flutter to the ground. And — like falling leaves — they remind us of the ephemeral nature of life. Rarely do we have the opportunity to pick those leaves up, press them between two sheets of wax paper, and save them for posterity’s sake. Recently, I was curled up in bed when one of those “beautiful moments” caught my eye. I tried to enjoy it […]

The Boundless Joy of Urban Doghood

June 1, 2012 by Gina Marie

Near our home in Philadelphia, there is a fenced-in area where some tennis courts once stood. Now, the area serves as a favorite frolicking-place of a certain Boxer princess I know. “Ein Leben ohne Boxer ist möglich, aber sinnlos.” Translation: “A life without Boxer is possible, but senseless.”
